Math the easy way

January 15, 2009

Math programs such as Maple, Matlab, and Origin are super expensive(atleast for a student…) so i did some searching around for some open source gems that will do teh trick just as well for your mathamatical mind within…

GNU Octave and Scilab: these two programs are just about identical to matlab, but i have favored octave since its gnu’er

R: this is basicly a clone of origin

Mathomatic: idk where this should be classified but it sure is nifty for derivatives to algebraic manipulation…

I have found that these programs work great for the engineer within!!!

The Monster with Blue Teath

January 8, 2009

So I decided to get a blue tooth adapter the other day. Turns out those usb to blue tooth boogers are now smaller than a dime now and the one I picked up(targus) works native with linux, which was just as exciting as the actual hardware lol… I was also surprised how easy it was to sync my old beat up razer cell phone to grab the pictures off of it.

<the fun begins!!!>

My mom works for a release program for students. They have been wanting a smart board for some time now. The only problem is that these things cost a heap of money(like $5k). The wii has been a piece of my life for some time now that the engineering department has one in the break room. I recalled a prof. talking about how they are so hackable and I recalled they incorporated ir leds for location of the wii. While googleing around i found a some neato utilities that harnessed this to make a white board for the cost of a wii-mote the bluetooth adapter and a led… check it out its pretty neato stuff!!!

Now I’m not gready so I guess I can cut the public schools a deal and sell them to them for half of the 5k orso lol

Other interesting things to note about bluetooth is that it has a range of up to 30Km or roughly 18 miles!!!

If you can’t stand the heat…

January 7, 2009

One night a few years ago i got the idea of making something hot, so i drew up some plans for a blast furnace!!!

The basics: I took a couple of the cans of popcorn my family got for christmas and cut the bottom out of them with a skill saw. I then used them as a base for the refractory mix which is kitty litter boiled to a paste then mixed with concrete sand and gravel. for for the blower I checked out the local flee market with a pair of quarters to purchased their finest hair dryer. the pipe that goes into the furnace is a piece off of a trampoline… the fuel can be anything that burns from oil to coal to wood to charcoal…

Here are some pics of an old mac I figured would make a good show!!!
PS this only took a matter of seconds(like 15)

RMS: Ninja or Pirate

January 7, 2009

I have been contemplating lately whether RMS is a ninja or a pirate… I have came to the conclusion threw xkcd that he is indeed a pirate and sleeps with ninja swords at night… I am still perplexed about this though since he has a pirates beard…
